TheRecessed story: Centuries ago, sculptors discovered by carving deeply into marble they would create enhanced contrast of high and low points when the sun backlit the artwork. In the early 19th century a popularization of this effect occurred as artists hand carved intricate relief's into thin sheets of wax. At night, a candle was placed behind the wax sheet, making the carving appear like a picture. People collected these relief's like postcards, showing them like home movies, or travelogs. The advent of photography quickly outgrew this art form although modern artists continue producing images that are mass produced in Porcelain.
