Regarding the quality of the original photo and our goals in making details.

All photos (all styles) may be sent for a free evaluation if you please. Sharper images are better then soft focus, although we can often adjust that, We are more concerned with harsh shadows then anything else. Since profile carvings only portray the subjects head there is no need to worry about the photo's backround. That's basically it, regarding the compisition of the photo. In you original photo you may even have your hair a little out of place because we often create streaks or waves that depict what your image portrays (see below).

We usually program carvings to generally smooth out irregularites. We want your artwork to be timeless. We want people to see the smoothest cleanest image we can create UNLESS you specifically ask for a carving that features imperfections. An example of this may be a relief of an actor protraying a charictor or where the person depicted wants to be remembered as "The wise old owl". It's up to you but we usually make everyone look smother and sleeker then in real life, keeping the qualitys that compose the features of the individual. On all profiles will send a photo realistic rendering for your approval, before we cut any material. The imporant aspects of the original photo submitted are sharpness and no shadows.

The silver relief requires the smaller tool (close-up photo) to create smaller details. The larger tool will skimp over the valleys in the relief without carving much detail. Because the smaller tool is way more fragile it must travel at significantly slower speeds or it will break.

Conversely, the small tool will adequately carve the same areas on the larger gold relief but because of the slower speeds it may take five times longer to cut then the larger tool.

As you can see, selecting the correct tool is important but in many cases it sometimes takes longer to carve a small relief then a larger one.

If your photo is not a profile we can change it into one electronically. A small extra charge of ten dollars is needed to cover the time it takes to do this.

The original photo is in the lower right corner. As you can see we did not take a very good photo that day, his hair was flat and there are unsightly lines along the neck, but look what it became. Our process lends itself to what is commonly referred to as "Artistic License". Our interpretation of art is to make the finished sculpture look as smooth possible without loosing the subjects individuality. The most important aspect of your original photo is no harsh shadows on the face itself.
If you look at our process like having jewelry made then you know a custom ring, with no precious gems, may run several hundred dollars because of the time it takes to hand carve and finish. Fortunately, we are using computerized machines to carve your relief which saves lot's of time compared to a traditional sculptor. We gladly pass the value along to you in the hopes that you will recommend us to your friends.

We hope this explains our overall price structure concerning design and machining costs being similar even if the finished sizes are different. Incidentally, 99 percent of the time we need to change the artwork if two (or more) different sizes are ordered so as to accommodate smaller or larger tools If we don't do this, the smaller relief's will have no detail and the larger relief's will take an exorbitant amount of time to carve with no added benefits.

The first step is to submit the photo of choice for a free evaluation and we'll take it from there. All photos will be evaluated before we begin work. Should a photo not work for our processes we will contact you to discuss alternatives before we proceed. We can also send an Email informing you that the photo is good and we will proceed with the order.
